EU food-safety standards, in particular, surprise many Georgian farmers. “Farmers would come up to me and say ‘I never poisoned anyone,’” recounted Nino Zambakhidze, the strongly pro-EU chairperson of the 1,200-member Georgian Farmers Association. “They almost take it personally.”

According to her, the situation is a bit better when it comes to cows, since there exist slaughterhouses in Georgia that satisfy the international standards.However,
when it comes to smaller livestock or poultry, things don’t look too good.

President of Georgia, Mr. Giorgi Margvelashvili and the chairwoman of Georgian Farmers' Association Nino Zambakhidze met Koia Nishikava, minister of Fishing and Tiber Industry, during their official visit to Japan.
During the event, Georgian Farmers’ Association and Agricultural Cooperatives’ Development Agency met Farmer’s Unions and Associations from different countries. The exchange of experience and ideas as well as planning for the future collaboration took place among the associations from Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia and Georgian Farmers’ Association. During the negotiations Miss Nino Zambakhidze underlined the importance of deep and all-embracing free trade with the European Union and got acquainted with the influence of integration in the European Union on the agriculture of Eastern European countries. It should be mentioned that the role of the cooperatives turned out to be key factor for the agriculture in those countries during this transitional period.

Inclusive Growth Dialogue on Family Farming in Georgia
On 11 October, 2014 ISET hosted the seventh dialogue in the series of Inclusive Growth Dialogues organized by the ISET Policy Institute (ISET-PI) in partnership with the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
The main purpose of this event was to present challenges and opportunities of family farming in Georgia, and discuss related policy recommendations.

Chairwoman of Georgian Farmers’ Association Nino Zambakhidze, vice Chairwoman of Georgian Farmers’ Association Ana Kvaratskhelia, Agricultural Attaché of the European Union Juan Echanove and the chairman of Agricultural Cooperatives’ Development Agency Giorgi Misheladze took part in European Farmers’ Congress which took place on 7th of October in 2014, in city of Brussels. The theme of the Congress convened by Copa Cogeca (Union of European Agricultural Associations and Cooperatives) consequently was “The new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) 2014-2020 and Family Farming: growth and employment for EU rural areas”. There were panel debates on how EU competitiveness can be improved for family farmers and how can CAP reform be implemented for the benefits of the farmers and cooperatives.

On 16th of September, 2014, 10:30, in Tbilisi, at the Hotel "HolidayInn Tbilisi", Georgian-Ukrainian business forum took place.During the forum, Georgian Minister of Agriculture, Ukrainian Food Agricultural Policy Minister and leader of Georgian Chamber of Commerce and Industry addressed the auditorium. In addition to this,B2B meetings were conducted between Ukrainian and Georgian companies.Sphere of interest of Ukrainian companies included agriculture.

The Minister of Agriculture Otar Danelia and Government attorney of Samtskhe-Javakheti region - Governor Akaki Machutadze have met with local farmers in Akhaltsikhe municipality and visited Cheese and combined feed producing enterprise of “Georgian Business Zone” Ltd in the village Tsnisi. Otar Danelia got familiar with cheese and combined feed producing process. Cheese production capacity equals to 2.5 tones daily. Up to 400-500kgs. of so called “Imeruli” cheese is produced. It’s planned to enrich the assortment of cheese with “Tenili” and “Chechili” variety of cheese. The company sells its production in all big chains of supermarkets in Georgia. “Georgian Business Zone” Ltd built abovementioned enterprise with the assistance of donor organizations.

Association and Arzani Livestock-Breeding Farm. Anyone can buy the
livestock. As the chairman of Arzani company clarifies, it is possible
to get 3 times more milk from this type of cow as opposed to the one
that is common in Georgia.
